New EMV Chip Debit Mastercards have Arrived! Questions?
  • Q: When can I expect to receive my new chip card?
A: BBCU chip cards will be mailing the new EMV chip debit cards in November and December 2017. Your new card will have a new number and a new PIN. Please activate and start using your new card as soon as you receive it. Please destroy your old debit card. Your old debit card will be automatically deactivated January 4, 2018.
  • Q: What is an EMV Chip?
A: A microprocessor chip embedded in your card that securely stores and transfers data. EMV stands for Europay, Mastercard and VISA after a joint effort between the three to ensure a secure and global way for MasterCard and VISA to be accepted worldwide. All Birmingham Bloomfield Credit Union Debit Mastercard will now have EMV chips embedded in them.
  • Q: Why has BBCU switched to EMV chip-enabled debit cards?
A: Replacing magnetic-stripe-only debit cards with EMV chip-enabled and magnetic stripe provides more security because the account information is encrypted in the chip, making it more difficult to fraudulently copy the debit card details. Also, the chip-enabled debit cards are a standard payment method around the world, so having this feature makes purchasing abroad much easier.
  • Q: How does chip technology protect my information?
A: Every time you use your card at a chip-enabled terminal, the embedded chip generates a unique transaction code. This prevents stolen data from being fraudulently used. However, in this day and age the chip card is not 100% guaranteed to prevent all related debit card fraud. Although it is a significant security enhancement, it is crucial to get into the habit of monitoring your account for fraudulent activities and to report them immediately.
  • Q: Where can I use my EMV debit card?
A: Your Birmingham Bloomfield Credit Union Debit Mastercard will work anywhere Mastercard is accepted. Some merchants will be slower to accept chip technology, therefore your card still includes a magnetic strip for use in traditional terminals.
  • Q: What are the benefits of EMV debit cards?
A: Chip-enabled debit cards add an extra layer of security. Every time you make purchases at a chip-activated terminal, a unique transaction code is generated.
  • Q: How do I use my EMV debit card?
A: For retailers with chip-enabled terminals, simply insert your chip debit card face up in the terminal, where it will remain until the transaction is processed. A series of easy-to-use prompts will instruct you for each step. If a retailer is not yet enabled to process chip cards, simply swipe your card as you normally do. Transactions conducted over the phone or online remain the same.
  • Q: My debit card isn’t working, what are some possible reasons why?
A: Reason #1 – You are inserting the debit card incorrectly. Make sure you are inserting the chip portion of the card into the terminal for the entire transaction.

Reason #2 – The debit card was removed too soon. Do not remove the debit card from the terminal before the transaction has been completed. Removing the debit card early will result in a cancelation of the transaction.

Reason #3 – You are at a self-serve kiosk. You may not be able to use this debit card at these types of terminals.
