Our Story

Michigan United Credit Union was established on July 1, 2021 as a result of the merging of four small-asset sized credit unions namely Birmingham Bloomfield Credit Union, Metro North Federal Credit Union, Lakes Community Credit Union and Unity Credit Union. The collaboration of these credit unions created an exciting opportunity for us to deliver a top-notch experience for our membership with an expanded line of products and services.

On November 23, 1931, Birmingham Teachers was organized and charted in the State of Michigan by a group of teachers. Located in a classroom at Barnum Elementary School, the Credit Union was originally created to serve the teachers and other employees of the Birmingham School system. Eventually the credit union moved to a small house on Woodward Avenue in Birmingham and in 1963, it was moved to the Lincoln Street location.

In 1974 the field of membership was expanded to include teachers from the West Bloomfield school district and our first branch location was opened at Abbott Middle School in West Bloomfield and later moved to Cass Lake Road in Keego Harbor.

The Credit Union name was changed in 1995 from Birmingham Teachers Credit Union to Birmingham Bloomfield Credit Union to properly reflect our membership.

As the credit union continued to grow, we needed a main office that allowed for us to offer a more convenient way to serve our membership. A new building was built at our Lincoln Street location that allowed for drive-thru Windows and an ATM. In February 2003 the new and improved Birmingham Office was opened to the membership.

In February 2006 the credit union once again expanded our field of membership when OFIR granted the credit union a community charter that encompassed the county of Oakland Michigan.

In February 2012, the credit union purchased a former bank location on Highland Road and relocated our Keego Harbor branch to Waterford. With this new location, we added a drive-thru, an ATM and Safe Deposit Boxes.

May 2019 brought us to another Field of Membership expansion. In order to compete, have the ability to grow, provided excellent products and services to more of the community, the Board of Directors expanded our charter to include anyone who lives, works, worships, or has a business in the State of Michigan.

Also in 2019, Birmingham Bloomfield Credit Union merged with Metro North Federal Credit Union. Their original field of membership was the employees of the Waterford school district and later expanded to include the Holly school district when Metro North FCU merged in the Holly Teachers Credit Union. This merger added two full-service locations branches, one in Waterford and the other in Holly. The credit unions assets grew from $69M to $118M. Membership grew from about 5,200 to 11,600.

In 2020 another merger took place with Lakes Community Credit Union. Their original field of membership was the employees of Michigan Bell and later expanded to a community charter covering five counties. With this merger Birmingham Bloomfield Credit Union added three additional branch locations in Lake Orion, Waterford, and Shelby Township. The credit union assets grew from $120M to $220M. Membership almost doubled in size to over 21,000.

In 2021, the Board of Directors changed the name from Birmingham Bloomfield Credit Union to Michigan United Credit Union to accommodate the field of membership and collaborative mergers.

Also in 2021, Michigan United Credit Union merged with Unity Credit Union. Their original field of membership was UAW-CIO Locals 155, 157, 160, 174, 189, 203,329, 360, and 408. Unity merged SPOT Credit Union 8/28/1981, Detroit Methodist Conference Credit Union 10/1/1990, United Family Credit Union 9/17/2004, and Kramer Homes Federal Credit Union. With the Unity merger Michigan United Credit Union added 2 additional branch locations in Warren and Saint Clair Shores. The credit union assets grew from $282M to $340M. Membership grew to almost 25,000.
